Hypebeast Turns 20: Celebrating Two Decades of Contemporary Culture

Hypebeast, the leading global platform for contemporary culture and lifestyle, hosted its 20th anniversary celebration, a comprehensive tribute to two decades of driving culture forward, swerving between global subcultures and commenting on the ever-changing cultural climate to actively shape the contemporary zeitgeist. This milestone was marked by a multi-city exhibition debuting in the heart of New York City and was followed by a series of collaborations with core cultural figures, including Supreme, fragment, and UNDERCOVER.

The Anniversary Exhibition: A Cultural Retrospective
To reflect on the past and look to the future, the gallery-style exhibition, titled Hypebeast Twenty, opened its doors in Lower Manhattan, New York City, to showcase the evolution of streetwear. The exhibit housed two decades of the brand’s ephemera, tracing its influence and paying homage to the defining brands, products, people, and cultural shifts since 2005. This also included retrospectives of past Hypebeast collaborations and previous print magazines, together with the newest edition, Hypebeast Magazine Issue 36: The Platinum Issue.

The centerfold of the exhibition came in the form of 20 exclusive Hypebeast T-shirt collaborations. Each T-shirt was created in direct partnership with a key brand or designer that has molded Hypebeast’s cultural vision, featuring an unparalleled lineup that includes Supreme, Brain Dead, fragment, ACRONYM, Takashi Murakami, Virgil Abloh Archive™, UNDERCOVER, Kaws x Human Made, and more. The 20th anniversary T-shirts, in tribute to the brand’s legacy within youth culture, dropped online at hbx.com starting October 22 and were available for purchase at the NYC show from October 23 – 26.

Exclusive Product Collaborations
Beyond the retrospective, the exhibit housed new, dual-minded collaborative garments and goods from our brand partners. These items were available for purchase on-site at the exhibition. Ray-Ban was offering 20 numbered Hypebeast exclusive Mega Balorama sunglasses, while Umbro came equipped with 20 pairs of specially designed tracksuits.

Additionally, Stone Island had its new Friendly Pressure Audio System set up at the exhibition for early viewing and pre-order. Attendees also got a first look at a Citizen Watch collaboration, the Hypebeast 20th Anniversary Zenshin Super Titanium watch, and viewed a one-of-one Michelob ULTRA Varsity Jacket with hand-crafted patches highlighting Hypebeast’s global presence and milestone year.
